Deep in Australia's outback, at no less than 5 hours by car from Alice Springs (itself in the middle of nowhere) you will find Watarrka National Park. It will take some time and effort to get here, but Watarrka National Park is well worth a visit.
The focal point of attention in Watarrka (covering part of the rugged George Gill Range) is Kings Canyon, featuring red sand scenery and a gorge with walls towering up to 100 meters high. Impressive stuff, and some would say not to be missed in an Australia itinerary.
The best way to explore Kings Canyon is by hiking around its desert scenery - there are several such hikes you can choose from but the Rim Walk (going 7km around the canyon) is the one most favored.
There is no accomodation within the park, but King's Canyon Resort nearby offers excellent facilities. [Review by travelindicator]
