Alpine scenery and volcanoes

Tongariro National Park is New Zealand's oldest national park, located on North Island
Featuring 3 active volcanoes and fantastic scenery including lakes, forests and rivers
Tongariro Alpine Crossing is the most famous trek, but can be quite the arduous affair in winter

3 active volcanoes, religious Māori sites, skiing. UNESCO World Heritage status, hot springs, mountains, lakes. Alright, we have just given you a few keywords, but be honest and tell me you aren't convinced already? This is New Zealand's Tongariro National Park, located in the heart of North Island.

The park measures nearly 800 square kilometers and back in 1887 was established as the country's first national park, both for its natural beauty and cultural heritage. The peaks of Tongariro, Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe - all active volcanoes - form the core of it. But surrounding them is alpine scenery of pristine beauty featuring forests, lakes, rivers and streams.

The main attraction of the park is the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. This trek brings you past all that the park has to offer, though be warned that in winter it is a little more than just a "walk in the park", and you should be prepared to bring the necessary equipment. [Review by travelindicator]

More Tongariro National Park travel resources

For starters, check out the Tongariro National Park website which summarises their contents according to eat, play and dine logic. We like that. Newzealand.com has more, while tongarironationalpark.com has a more commercial purpose it seems, but is still quite useful, especially its description of activities (quad bikes seem cool). Backpacking Matt did a cool write-up while Cookiesound has some majestic photos of the place.
