Come for the beaches

If you're not American and think you've never heard of the Hamptons, think harder. Unless you really have never seen a hip-hop artist brag about driving his big blinging car around in this part of New York, then you're excused. But otherwise, well, that's where you've heard about this place before.

The Hamptons are a series of villages around Southampton, Sag Harbor and East Hampton in the far eastern end of Long Island, New York. In roughly a 2 hours drive from central Manhattan you arrive in a green area where wealth is on display all around you: enormous Great Gatsby-esque mansions, neatly trimmed gardens, big cars, you get the idea.

The beaches in the Hamptons are wide and some of the best we have seen anywhere. Main Beach in East Hampton is the obvious choice, but the less crowded Georgica Beach (actually a private beach) or surfing heaven beaches at Montauk are up there as well. If the beaches don't strike your fancy, there are always art galleries, antique shops, wineries and some of the best restaurant in the entire state to enjoy. Be prepared for crowds in the summer.
