If you want to holiday where the good people of Amsterdam (and surrounding North Holland province) holiday, you've found your spot: Texel. Texel is one of the Dutch Wadden islands, the order of which the Dutch tediously have to learn in school by the abbreviation TVTAS: Texel, Vlieland, Terschelling, Ameland, Schiermonnikoog. Texel is the first and most westernmost of the set, just a short 3km or 30 minutes ferry off the North Holland coast (Den Helder).
Texel may be home to just under 15,000 people, but in summer months the island fills up with mostly Dutch and also some German tourists. It is not hard to see why they like it here, as the scenery in Texel is remarkably varied for such a small place. From forests to sand dunes and wide beaches, to hills and wetlands (De Slufter), you would really struggle to find a better place for long walks or such quintessentially Dutch activities as biking around the 25km long island. Although note that the weather here gets notoriously windy.
There are 7 interesting villages on the island, of which Den Burg is the largest, De Koog is where you go for nightlife and Den Hoorn is probably the most appealing one overall. [Review by travelindicator]
