Let us tell you something you didn't know: the Republic of France and Kingdom of the Netherlands share a border. France lies in the north and the Netherlands lies in the south. That doesn't sound right at all, but nothing about what we say is incorrect. The border is shared on the Caribbean island of Saint Martin (south of Anguilla and east of Puerto Rico), where the southern half is covered by Sint Maarten, a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The northern part is the French overseas collectivity of Saint-Martin.
This is not some obscure outpost either. Juliana International Airport, with its unusually close approach over Maho Bay beach (see picture), in the Dutch side's capital of Philipsburg is one of the most significant airports in the Caribbean from where you can transfer on to many lesser known Caribbean islands in the region.
There is no doubt about it, St. Maarten is a very developed place. So besides beaches, expect to find excellent venues for shopping and eating (for French food you may want to try the French side of the island, but nowadays the Dutch side has most ethnic bases covered food-wise). For something else, try to do some water sports, check out the butterfly farm, or head to Pic Paradis. This is the highest point of the whole island and can be found in the French part. It offers spectacular views over the entire rainforest covered island. [Review by travelindicator]
