Phuket is the largest island of Thailand, situated off its west coast in the Andaman Sea. It is one of the premier beach holiday destination in south-east Asia, and a surprisingly diverse place. Depending on who you speak to, the island can be described as a party island (if they visited Patong and its infamous Soi Bangla), a colonial historic place (if they visited Old Phuket town) or an extremely serene and beautiful island if they visited the rest of it (and probably stayed in a luxury resort)!
Needless to say you need to pick your location on the island with care, as it will entirely define the kind of holiday you will have here. In terms of things to see, there are quite a few interesting places to see and things to do, but make sure that Phang Nga Bay with its fantastic scenery and limestone cliffs is on top of your list.
The best time to visit Phuket is anywhere between December and March, as precipitation is at its lowest, the sun shines and there is a seemingly permanent breeze over the island. Temperatures are stable year-round, though there is a slight peak in February until April. [Review by travelindicator]

A good place to start is this travel guide from the Telegraph describing the beaches, attractions and restaurants of Phuket. Phuket Magazine is not a bad source either, with lots of basic info on attractions but also more specific articles like this one on the island's best beach clubs. Of course for the basics you can also head over to Wikitravel on Phuket or Lonely Planet.
