Rugged Wilderness

Scenery ranging from alpine tundra to caves, gorges and waterfalls (Virginia Falls is notable)

Through a valley of the Mackenzie Mountains flows the massive South Nahanni River, the focal point of UNESCO listed Nahanni National Park Reserve in Canada's Northwest Territories.

This stunning park (size 30,050 km2 or 11,602 sq mi, roughly the size of Belgium) features rugged wild scenery that includes thick boreal forest, some of the deepest canyons in the country, mountain ranges, alpine tundra, waterfalls, caves and hot springs. That is quite a list, and if you are lucky, or unlucky depending on your point of view, you may even come face to face with a herd of wolves or a grizzly bear while there.

Still, most people decide to travel here for one thing only: whitewater canoeing, rafting or kayaking on the Nahanni. Some of the organised trips span multiple days and it is fair to say that it is not really suitable for beginning paddlers.

As there are no direct roads to this remote park, visitors tend to arrive by float-plane from Fort Simpson. [Review by travelindicator]

We like Planetware more and more. In this case you may also want to check out the Wiki on the park itself or perhaps rather the wiki on the South Nahanni River. Parks Canada is a good resource as well, while if you are ready to get bored, just read through the UNESCO text on this park.
