Most holy mountain

Mount Kailash is the most sacred mountain for Tibetans
Yearly pilgrimage involves rounds of over 50km around the mountain

If you made it this far west in China, you know damn well (sorry) what you came here for. That is Mount Kailash, the most holy of the mountains to the Tibetans, staring the Mount Everest (which is much further south-east) in the chin at an astonishing altitude of 6,638 meters.

The mountain is seen as sacred by Hindus, Buddhists and Jains alike, and every year the Tibetans come to do a pilgrimage (Kora), essentially making circles of some 50km around the mountain at altitudes of 4,000 to 5,000 meters, typically more than a dozen times. Around the mountain you will find a number of monasteries as well as a few restaurants and guesthouses. But make no mistake about it, if you decide to follow in the pilgrims footsteps, it is going to be a tough journey. [Review by travelindicator]
