God on top

Mont Saint-Michel is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the form of a tiny rocky island right in front of the coast (1km out) of Normandy, France. It is best known for the abbey and monastery of the same name that stand tall on top of it.

The monastery has stood there since the 700s and towers above shops and medieval houses, as was the societal structure of feudal Europe. Around it stands a sea wall, and a causeway leads to its entrance. The island can be accessed and climbed by pedestrians, but given that this is one of France's top tourist attractions, many people shun the crowds (plus the souvenirs and overpriced food) and just choose to admire the structure from afar.

An interesting aspect of Mont Saint-Michel is that it is effectively accessible by land on low tide, while at high tide it can be at times entirely surrounded by water. This served as a natural defense. [Review by travelindicator]
