Take yourself back in time, think of Charles Darwin traversing the high seas on board the Beagle to discover the worlds richest ecosystems and most amazing animals living in unspoiled environments, and it’s like you’ve been there already - that’s Lord Howe island. One of the most wonderfully preserved places in the world with an extraordinary ecosystem rich with life and a must see for anyone who loves nature or just wants to take a very relaxing holiday amongst natures finest.
Located in the Tasman sea between Australia & New Zealand (approximately 700km Northeast of Sydney); This is such a precious place that they actually allow a maximum of 400 tourists to step foot on the island at any one time, and if they didn’t do this, we would feel kinda bad writing about it and encouraging you to go there.
The formal tourism slogan for Lord Howe Island is 'Just Paradise' and it is a very fitting description. What you will see and find is very unique, some animals that you won’t find anywhere else in the world, possibly even the universe. The other destination of compare is the better known Galapagos islands, and they are not as strict with their visitation rules (perhaps unfortunately so).
Like all cool places it is formed as the result of a no longer active Volcano and life adapted to the island's isolated ecosystem. The island remained uninhabited and unknown, at least in a recorded sense, until 1788 when a returning ship from Norfolk island ducked ashore to claim it as British possession before heading back to base for Tea. It is regulated under the Australian State of New South Wales and at the last census in 2011 there resided about 360 people who have lived there for some six generations.
A subtropical climate with a yearly average temperature of 22.1 degrees sounds pretty good to us. [Review by nikodonnell]
