Jeda Villa Bali

Indonesia's best kept secret

For those tired of Bali, there is always Lombok next door. While nowadays mass tourism flocks to Bali with the mistaken assumption that they will *collectively* find tropical tranquility there, those in the know are aware that those days have passed in Bali and have set their eyes on Lombok instead. Separated from Bali by the Lombok Strait, Lombok is approximately the same size as Bali and there are some cultural similarities as well (though Lombok's culture is perhaps more low key, and notably majority islamic). But enough about Bali, let's properly focus on Lombok:

Geographically speaking, the west of Lombok is where most tourist infrastructure is located. Here lies Mataram, the capital of the province of West Nusa Tenggara of which Lombok forms a part. In the west you will find many fantastic beaches, markets, and the fabled Gili Islands, a main stay in Asia's backpacker circuit. The attraction of those islands is clear: shallow warm turquoise waters, coral reefs with sharks roaming about, countless seaside bars and restaurants, no cars and a laid-back vibe.

If all of that sounds touristic and slightly reminiscent of Bali, you're right. Now head back to the main island. South Lombok is where you will want to go if you are after dreamy remote white sand beaches - though don't think for a moment that they will be easy to reach. North Lombok features the spectacular active volcano of Mount Rinjani as well as the famous waterfalls of Tiu Tega and Jeruk Manis. [Review by travelindicator]
