Loire Valley is the Crème de la Crème or perhaps rather Vin de la Vigne (Wine of the Vine) of France. This spectacular region produces some of the world's best wines, it is a must see for wine lovers or just lovers as it is a very romantic place to visit (so much so that your partner may just think a proposal is imminent).
The Loire Valley (Vallée de la Loire) region is identified predominately by the Loire river which flows along its banks. It is however the longest river in France - flowing for a distance of some 1000 kilometres so for clarification and to save you searching along all of it, we are specifically focusing on the UNESCO World Heritage site between Sully-sur-Loire & Chalonnes. This is a region that stretches about 280 kilometres of the river and covers 800 square kilometres. It is a popular place for tourists and there is good reason for this as it is a very picturesque part of the world. We would challenge you to take a bad photo here. Worth a visit are the towns: Blois, Chinon, Orléans, Saumur and Tours.
Discovering this region by boat and bicycle are a recommended way to fully soak in and enjoy this valley of the kings. There are operators and vendors for both that you can find once there, perhaps ask your concierge who they recommend.
A final mention must be made to the stunning chateaux (castles) in the region like the Château de Chambord, Château d'Azay-le-Rideau, Château de Valençay & Château de Sully-sur-Loire a simple ‘Oh Wow’ may suffice for these; if travelling in this area a visit to a some of these are rather on the 'must see' list and less on the ‘only if there’s time’ list. Take a tour and get your postcard photo.
Feel free to indulge in this destination anytime of year really; though July has the most hours of sunshine. [Review by nikodonnell]
