Immigration problems and glorious beaches

Lampedusa is an island in the Pelagie Islands chain and (as a commune called Lampedusa e Linosa) part of the Agrigento province of Sicily in Italy. Being closer to Tunisia than to the Italian mainland, Lampedusa has in recent years been targeted by heavy immigration from North Africa, putting strains on the island. However, as most of this is coped with through a deportation center, you can basically ignore the headlines and go on holiday here without problem (we realise that some may not feel comfortable with this, but to each their own perspective on such matters).

If you do go to Lampedusa, you will be treated to an odd mix of Italy and Northern Africa. Not so much in terms of its culture, as the island does not have many attractions in that area, but rather the barren arid scenery of this small rocky island (20 km2), which looks unlike anything else you will see in Europe. It may not be to everyone's liking, but few will deny that it is quite striking. The higher points are in the west of the island while the south-east has the resorts, airport and only town. Those are all centered around the only real attraction of this island: the beaches.

Lampedusa's tourist numbers are not massive (fishing is actually the island's main stay), but it's more popular coves with pristine white beaches can fill up in the brief high season. Those can however be easily avoided by taking a short hike anywhere west through one of the plentiful paths. Head over to Rabbit Beach to find maybe the most picturesque beach in Europe. At least the sand is so white that it hurt our eyes. [Review by travelindicator]

We liked this piece by Italy Magazine as well as another one by Delicious Italy. Then there is Life in Italy and well.. that's about it. No wait, a special mention for an article in The Independent that does a good job of portraying the type of atmosphere you will encounter on Lampedusa.
