Koh Samet (Thailand)

Koh Samet Travel Guide and Trip Resources

A perfect place for doing nothing

Koh Samet is an island off the coast of PrayongNot a lot of activities
1 hour from Pattaya or 2 hours from Bangkok, then 30 minutes by ferry
Very peaceful and quiet, especially further south

Tourists to Thailand typically focus on the islands out in the Andaman or further south in the Gulf of Thailand. We are talking about places like Phuket or Koh Samui. Koh Samet is lesser known, and that may not be a bad thing.

Geographically speaking the island is much closer to Bangkok than the other island groups just mentioned. However, Koh Samet actually is not that straightforward to reach. There is no airport here, so you will have to either drive from Pattaya or Bangkok to the pier in Ban Phe, Rayong (approximately 1 and 2 hours, respectively). From there it's half an hour by ferry.

Most of Samet island is undeveloped. Thick jungle and limited roads make this island hard to get around on, and that probably contributes to the peacefulness of the place. A lack of attractions will make it hard to convince most to leave their resort, which for us city people who can feel the need to do something every. single. day. is not a bad thing... '

The beaches here are nicer than we have seen them anywhere in Thailand anyway, while scope for other activities really is quite limited. Samet has no reefs of its own so there is not a lot of diving going on, and there are no longtail boats for island trips either.

The most crowded and developed place is Hat Sai Kaew up north, which also has good nightlife, while if you head further south the villages get smaller and quieter. Out in the west you find the quiet beach of Ao Phrao. [Review by travelindicator]
