Koh Mak (Thailand)

Koh Mak Travel Guide and Trip Resources

Rustic

Koh Mak is an island in Thailand's Trat Province
South of Koh Chang and North of Koh Kut (Koh Kood)
Long stretches of sandy beaches and pure relaxation

We are fast completing our coverage of every Thai holiday island under the sun, and Koh Mak is one of those lesser known places that we only got to at a later stage. That in itself is quite telling, as this small island in the National Marine Park of Trat province is quite the opposite of the overcrowded better known Thai islands. In contrast, Koh Mak is rustic and undeveloped and a bit harder to get to.

In between Ko Chang and Koh Kut (Koh Kood), you get to Koh Mak by flying into Trat and then taking a speed boat from one of the piers there, for instance the one at Laem Sok. Once you get here, you find an island with a local person to resort ratio of about 1 to 30 (there are about 800 locals and 2 dozen resorts), and as Wikipedia describes it, "a temple, a primary school, 3 fishing villages [and] a market". Lovely.

The island itself is somewhat hilly, contains a number of rubber plantations and has long stretches of sandy beaches with clear waters in front of them. Resorts and cottages line the shores all around. Activities which don't involve a hammock include hiking, biking or diving and snorkelling. Lovely. [Review by travelindicator]

The Guardian's Thailand's Lesser Known Isands makes reference to Koh Mak. Of course the place is covered by Lonely Planet and by Wikitravel, while the Koh Mak Guide may come in handy. We loved the pictures at the Shooting Star and Hole in the Donut (both blogs).
