Ko Yao is an archipelago in between Krabi and Phuket in Thailand, roughly a quarter the size of the latter. The total population is just about 12,500 (3% of that of Phuket), which is spread across the two main islands of Ko Yao Noi - the most developed of the two - and Ko Yao Yai. The islands form part of Phang Nga Province.
If you know the scenery in Krabi and Phuket, you also know pretty much what to expect in Ko Yao. What is different is the level of development and crowdedness. On Ko Yao you will find a total of maybe two dozen resorts which are mostly located on the east coast of Ko Yao Noi. Though still small in number, their construction appears to be speeding up.
Outside of the resorts local muslim fishermen quietly go about their day. Infrastructure is lacking in most places and the interior is a mixture of jungle, hilly terrain and rubber or coconut plants only very rarely interrupted by wooden house villages. You can rent scooters or arrange a tuk tuk to tour around the few roads the island has.
You can get in here by taking a ferry from either Krabi, Phuket or Phang Nga proper. [Review by travelindicator]
