In terms of size the six Phi Phi Islands (Ko Phi Phi) are tiny. The largest island of Phi Phi Don is 8 by 3.5 km (5 by 2 miles), which is about a fraction 20 smaller than its neighbour of Phuket. But you didn't come here to read about boring statistics, you came here to read about the bounty and beauty of the islands. And rightly so, for the Phi Phi Islands must be one of the most beautiful island groups anywhere in the world.
Most of the world was introduced to the islands in the 2000 Leonardo DiCaprio movie The Beach (which was actually done mostly at Maya Bay on the island of Ko Phi Phi Le). That means that most of the world probably still thinks of Phi Phi as a some kind of secret and undisturbed island destination, rich with lush jungles, cliffs and waterfalls in the interior and turquoise waters out at sea.
Although it cannot be denied that the natural beauty is still there, you will be hard pressed to find anyone describing the islands as undisturbed or undeveloped. Crowds throng to it and it can feel a bit like one big tourist trap. Our advice? Mute your expectations, focus on the beauty of the nature, go to Phi Phi Don to party, check out Maya Bay, go for a swim/dive/snorkel. Spend a night or two, and then leave. As fast as you can.
