Let's face it, the list of Thai Ko (islands) worth visiting is very long, and picking the right one to spend your hard earned money on can be a daunting task. That's exactly why we are here to just give you the basics: Ko Lanta is where you need to go if you want to avoid the partying crowds, or rather the crowds altogether, and enjoy signature fantastic Thai beaches surrounded by unspoilt nature. The lower prices and more authentically Thai atmosphere of Lanta didn't bother us one bit either.
Forming part of Krabi Province, Ko Lanta lies in the Andaman Sea at about 45km to the south-east of what most tourists would refer to as "Krabi": Ao Nang and Krabi Town. Lanta has two-thirds the size but less than ten percent of the population of nearby Phuket, and unlike its larger neighbour is mostly flat. That means that the coastal scenery tends to be lacking in the spectacular limestone cliffs that you see elsewhere in the region, but the white sand beaches are plentiful and up there with the best of them.
We just mentioned that the island is far less crowded than its northern neighbours. Don't get us wrong, you will still be able to find long stretches of beaches - Klong Dao is the most prominent one - lined with resorts. If you are in the largest town of Saladan you won't feel all that removed from the action, though even in the high season the restaurants and bars are surprisingly not filled to the brim. Head down to the gorgeous and hilly National Park down south and you might even find yourself on an isolated beach for hours without seeing a single soul.
The nearest airport to Ko Lanta is Krabi (KBV), and from here you can arrange a taxi which will take you there in a bit over 2 hours (including a ferry). [Review by travelindicator]
