At 150 by 90km (93 by 56 miles), Kangaroo Island in South Australia may be the size of a small European country (think about twice the size of Luxembourg), yet in Australia it is hardly more than a dot on the map.
Merely a few thousand people call Kangaroo Island home, and though tourist numbers are large and growing, it is a safe bet for those looking for a bit of peace and quiet, natural scenery, wildlife and beaches.
Wildlife and natural scenery - Kangaroo Island is sparsely populated and quite isolated from mainland, allowing flora and fauna to thrive in its hilly interior. About half of the island's original wildlife has remained (far more than the mainland), and there are about 50 plant species that can't be found anywhere else on earth. Spotting kangaroos, penguins, echidnas, koalas and wallabies, dolphins and sea-lions in their natural environments is one of the main attractions here. The hilly landscape features rock formations and interesting lookouts.
Beaches - Kangaroo Island is home to over 50 long stretches of beach, most prominent of which is Vivonne Bay on the south side of the island with turquoise colored waters and white sand. Other than this, the best beaches tend to be on the north side of the island.
Getting here is best done by ferry from Cape Jervis (about 1.5 hours from Adelaide). It takes about 45 minutes to arrive in Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island. Accomodation is either in B&B or hotels in the main towns of Penneshaw and Kingscote, or on campsites around the island. [Review by travelindicator]
