Along the coast of São Paulo, you won't find a more perfect spot than Ilhabela. This archipelago whose name literally translates into "beautiful island" is separated from the mainland by a very narrow 2km strait, and on the opposite of that lies the city of São Sebastião from where you can take a ferry to the island.
The ferry can get crowded and it shouldn't surprise you that São Paulians know their way here, but once you're on the other side you are in for a real treat. Ilhabela is a combination of a rugged rainforest covered interior (of which 85% is protected as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve) and fantastic beaches. All of the development and resorts are concentrated on the west side of the island, and while there are some unpaved roads north and south from here, if you really want to get to the interior or hidden beaches of the east side you will have to either hike or (mountain) bike through the rugged terrain or hop on a boat.
If you are into diving, Ilhabela holds a special surprise in the form of 16th and 17th century shipwreck littered waters. A somewhat more nasty surprise are the unfortunately prevalent borrachudos (or as the wife and I started reffering to them, killer mosquitos). [Review by travelindicator]
