Hamilton Island (Australia)

Hamilton Island Travel Guide and Trip Resources

In the Great Barrier Reef

Hamilton island is an island of 5 square kilometers off Australia's Queensland
Part of the Great Barrier Reef, highly developed up north but more unspoilt in the south
Things to do? Swimming, diving, helicopter rides, hiking, kayaking, jet skiing...

For those of us not that familiar with travelling in Australia, it can be easy to forget that the country has places like Hamilton Island. We think of Australians themselves lining the beaches of Balinese resorts, so it makes sense that it doesn't immediately dawn upon us that Australia itself is home to paradise resort islands too.

Mackay on the mainland is the most significant city nearest to Hamilton Island at a 3 hours drive. However, as commercial flights arrive here on the daily from major Australian cities, that is not really something to worry about. The fact that you can fly in tells you something about the level of development of this place, as that is a luxury you won't find anywhere else in the Great Barrier Reef (of which Hamilton Island, itself part of the Whitsunday Islands, forms a part).

With a population of just over 1,200 and a size of merely 5 square kilometers, Hamilton isn't a terribly large place. While the north is hyper-developed with resorts and beaches approaching (succeeding?) perfection - Catseye Beach is the prime example - the south is undeveloped and unspoilt. We thought it made for an excellent mix, as you do get the luxury of exploring some of the most gorgeous scenery on earth but you simply won't have to spend much time figuring out where to go. We bet that you will end up in the buslands of the Passage Peak trail.

An obligatory list of other things to do here: kayaking around the islands, sailing around the Whitsunday islands and the Great Barrier Reef, scuba diving, golf, jet skiing, wind surfing, helicopter rides, and so on.

The best way to explore the island? By hiring a golf buggy. [Review by travelindicator]
