We are just going to presume you have heard of Ibiza before. That Balearic island probably brings up images of the most fantastic white sand beaches and a hedonistic nightlife scene that features some of the largest clubs in Europe. Formentera is Ibiza's sister island, only a short boat ride away from Ibiza, and to summarise it succintly: it has one of the two things just mentioned but not the other.
Yes, you guessed right. Formentera is a better choice for those fancying the fantastic beaches and nature of Ibiza, but who are not too keen on some of the rowdier aspects of a holiday there. Approximately 7 times smaller than its sister island and spanning 20 km across, Formentera does get crowded in summer months, but the crowds are of a different nature than those in Ibiza. Expect less partying teenagers and more Italian families.
Formentera's landscape is fairly arid and flat, creating a good environment for a hike or cycle trip. If you can stand the summer heat that is. But of course its main attraction are its beaches, which without any stretch of the imagination, could hold there own when compared to certain Caribbean islands. The sand is white, the water is azure and transparent.. what's not to like? [Review by travelindicator]
