When you see this place with your own eyes you will perhaps wonder: why on earth is the Grand Canyon such a household name but no one ever mentions Fish River Canyon? Measuring a breathtaking 160 kilometers long and 27 kilometers wide, this spot in southern Namibia lies along the lower reaches of the Fish River and is one of the country's natural wonders as well as main tourist attractions. It is also the second largest canyon in the world.
Well, we have the (partial) answer for you to our initial question as well: because to see the full beauty of this canyon system you will have to work pretty damned hard. The hiking trail of the same name is 85 kilometers long, and brings the daring across rugged terrain. Add in to the mix hot temperatures, and you really have quite the challenge. Take note though that you need to request a certificate and prove physical fitness before being allowed to hike here.
The entrance to the park lies in Hobas, near to where you will also be able to accesss the main Fish River Canyon view point. If a long hike is not your thing, that may just be your best bet. [Review by travelindicator]
