In the far north of Queensland, at a several hours drive from Cairns and north of Port Douglas, you will find Daintree Rainforest. This National Park of Australia is the largest in Australia and covers an area of about 1,200 square kilometers (460 square miles) along the coast.
The park is renowned for its biodiversity, as typically proven by statistics saying that it contains 90% of the bat and butterfly species of Australia (not sure why these are grouped together at all!), 7% of bird species, more than ten thousand insect species, etc. The age of the rainforest ecoystem is estimated at at least more than 100 million years old and quite a few of the species you find here are native to the area (for instance the prehistoric Cassowary bird).
Of course that doesn't mean that you should come to Daintree only if you are a biologist, as at the end of the day Daintree is a highly scenic place featuring mountains, rivers, beaches, swaps and mangroves, great coastal views and of course thick forests - everybody will find something to enjoy here.
There are many ways to explore the park and you can head on to the trails yourself, but activities that get organised here include coastal kayaking, (Daintree) River tours focussing on crocodiles or the mangroves, by car... [Review by travelindicator]
