Fantastically contrasting landscapes

Greece has thousands of islands, but none of them are as large as Crete (Κρήτη). The fifth largest island in the Mediterranean (after Sicily, Sardinia, Cyprus and Corsica) is a top European tourist destination, and not only for the reasons that become immediately obvious upon laying eyes on it - we're talking sun, sea and beaches. Because in addition to those Crete is home to very contrasting landscapes and a wealth in culture (being home to the Minoans, the earliest European civilization) that is unparalleled by any of the other island destinations in Europe.

While the coast of Crete is quite lush, once you head inland things change. Rugged and steep mountains, gorges and large plateaus filled with some of the most diverse flora and fauna anywhere in Europe. Head closer towards the white sand beaches and you come across olive groves, lemon trees and vineyards. All of this gives hints about two things that one can do tremendously well in Crete: anything active (walking, biking or hiking, of of course swimming and diving), and eating!

And on the cultural front, boy on the cultural front... Dotted around the island you find monasteries and many other ruins and hidden spots of interest, but the most interesting sight is the Palace of Knossos, a Bronze Age archaeological site just to the south of Heraklion that form the remnants of a palace that stood in what was the oldest city in Europe.

Besides this there are charming towns (Chania, Rethymnon or Vryses), world-class museums (Historical Museum of Crete), party hotspots (Chersonissos or Malia), major cities (Heraklion), and so on and so forth. There literally is something for everyone on Crete.

Did we mention sun, sea and beaches? [Review by travelindicator]
