The heart and soul of Java

Yogyakarta, or more commonly Jogja, is a city with an air of mystery over it. Ruled by a sultan, constantly threatened by the always-rumbling-in-the-background active volcano of Mount Merapi, and situated in the heartland of the very spiritual Javanese culture. Jakarta may have the business and the money, but Jogja is the heart and soul of Java. Officially it is an autonomous region of Indonesia.

There are plenty of attractions nearby the city, for instance the Borobudur near Magelang, the Prambanan temple or Mount Bromo with all of its beauty and might. But Jogja itself has enough to see to fill a few days as well. From its bustling becak-filled streets (Jalan Malioboro is a good one to take it all in), to the kraton which is home to the sultan with all its sights and sounds. Or maybe you just want to go shopping for some batik, see a wayang puppet show or hear the sounds of the gamelan. There is plenty of choice. [Review by travelindicator]
