Ski China

China's foremost ski resort

Yabuli is the premier ski resort in China, located at a 4 hours drive from HarbinPricey and pushy instructors
Well prepared slopes, Doppelmayr lifts and good facilitiesCold as h*ll (sorry) in January
Great for a day or two of intensive skiing, with some decent hotels and resorts (Club Med etc.) aroundRental equipment not always in mint condition

If you want good skiing in China, and we're not talking about a "well it's great skiing... for Chinese standards" type of good, you need to book a flight to Harbin (Heilongjiang) anywhere between November and March. From Harbin it takes you about 4 hours by car to reach Yabuli, China's foremost and largest ski resort.

With 9 intermediate to advanced slopes, a base altitude under 400 meters and the highest point at 1,345 meters, Yabuli's size at first sight seems unimpressive when you read the statistics. Indeed, Yabuli is not a ski resort that stands out by its size - although the longest run is a very respectable 3,000 meters - but rather by the quality of its slopes. They are all well-prepared (kept by snow cannons when conditions require), traversed by shiny Doppelmayr gondolas and cater to all skill levels. The fact that the national team practices here says it all, really.

On the downside though, common complaints about Yabuli are that the hotels and lift tickets are pricy, rental equipment isn't in mint condition, the slopes get closed down frequently and that the ski instructors aren't the best or friendliest bunch you will find anywhere in the world. Perhaps Yabuli isn't quite there yet in terms of soft qualities and tourist facilities, which is true for most of China we guess. But we feel comfortable recommending this place if all you are after is a day or two of boarding or skiing down the mountain. In that case you really won't be disappointed.

Note that given the freezing temperatures in January, a visit later in the season may be your best bet for a good experience. Try to avoid the weekends or Chinese holidays. [Review by travelindicator]
