Winipeg is the capital and largest city of Canada's southern Manitoba province. Built on the eastern edge of the Canadian Prairies and near the lake with the same name (meaning "muddy waters"), this is a city that does not seem to feature in many itineraries but is actually well worth a visit, as it has surprisingly much to offer.
The Forks National Historic Site is a must-visit. This used to be a meeting site for thousands of years for the Aboriginal population, and after the Europeans arrived became the site of a lively fur trade. Nowadays The Forks are a combination of a lively market, shops, a river walk and green space. The market is housed in a historic building and has a food court in it serving some very good "ethnically diverse" dishes.
Continuing on, there are the historical buildings in the inner city, with the prime example being the Manitoba Legislative Building with its iconic Golden Boy standing on top of the building.
The Exchange District National Historic Site is the heart of historic Winnipeg, home to many art galleries and cultural institutions. But the real draw there are the blocks full of (approximately 150) heritage buildings. A great area to stroll around in.
Cross over to the other side of the Red River and you find yourself in places where the streetnames start with "rue", i.e. the French Quarter of St. Boniface. Here you will find a cathedral with the same name, as well as quite a few really good restaurants. [Review by travelindicator]
