The political center of everything

Washington, D.C. is the capital of the United States
Center stage is taken by the National Mall: greenery linking the White House, Capitol, Lincoln Memorial and Smithsonian
Georgetown has an entirely different vibe to it than D.C.

Washington, D.C. (District of Columbia) is the capital of the United States and the seat of all three branches of its government: the president, Congress and the Supreme Court. Home to nearly 650,000 people, it is the center of everything political in the United States.

First and foremost on a tourist's mind when visiting D.C. is the National Mall, a long stretch of greenery that connects the White House to the Capitol, the Lincoln Memorial (as well as several others, like the Korean and Vietnam War Veterans Memorials) and the Smithsonian. The latter is an enormous collection of 19 museums that has by some been labeled the nation's "attic" for the sheer diversity of the millions of artifacts held by it. Some of the absolute must-sees are the National Air and Space Museum and National Museum of Natural History with its enormous dinosaur fossils. The National Gallery of Art is not technically part of the Smithsonian but should definitely be on your itinerary too.

But that there is more to Washington, D.C. becomes obvious when you head out to Georgetown, a historic neighbourhood of the city a bit further along the Potomac River. Here you will find colorful colonial buildings, the (hundreds of years old) campus of Georgetown University as well as plenty of interesting boutiques, bars and restaurants.
