Vitória, capital of the smaller Brazilian state of Espírito Santo, is spectacularly set. Against the backdrop of a very uneven and hilly coastline, the center of the city sits on an island in front of the Baía de Vitória, just cut off from the mainland by the river.
Pretty beaches like Praia do Canto and Camburi Beach across the river sit in front of high rises and greenery. If we were to construct an attractive coastal city in Simcity, this is basically what it would look like.
But it's not all shiny and modern in Vitória, as becomes apparent when you head further inland to the Cidade Alta where you for instance find the Metropolitana Cathedral and the Palacio Anchieta, the old governor's palace. The Parque da Fonte Grande nearby offers a green retreat.
In the end though, visitors here tend to conclude that Vitória is not really about sightseeing or the spectacular scenery, but rather just an easy going city with good beaches, food and excellent nightlife. [Review by travelindicator]
