Stereotypical American beach experience

Virginia Beach is a city of half a million on America's east coast
Popular beach destination in summertime
Backbay National Wildlife Refuge and First Landing State Park

Ask me about a stereotypical American east coast beach destination, and I am likely to blurt out Virginia Beach. Mile after mile of wide golden beaches, and much of it packed come summertime. Resorts and apartments for rent overlooking Resort Beach and the boardwalk as people walk, run, bike or skateboard by.

In summer this place is absolutely packed, though the sheer size of the beaches makes sure there is room enough for everyone. If you do get sick of the crowds, you may want to go golfing, whale or dolphin watching, or visit the Virginia Aquarium, though I'm pretty sure you won't be the only one there either. The one place where you can find some peace and quiet that time of year will be the parks outside the city, such as the Backbay National Wildlife Refuge and First Landing State Park.

If you are looking for a more usual city experience (keep in mind nearly half a million people call this city home), head a bit inland towards the Town Center where you will find plenty of bars and restaurants as well as the odd art gallery and malls. It's a convenient place, though does have a bit of an industrial feel to it. [Review by travelindicator]
