Rural Puerto Rico

Vieques is a small island off the coast of Puerto Rico, administered as a municipality
Until 2003 a bombing range testing ground for US Navy
Quieter than mainland Puerto Rico, secluded beaches and good for ecotourism

We're not saying Vieques, an island 8 miles (13km) off mainland Puerto Rico, is a place without five star resorts (anymore). But what we are saying, is that if you intend to come to Puerto Rico to party with the jetset and play golf, there are probably better spots to go than Vieques.

This island (administered as a municipality), which until 2003 was a bombing range testing ground for the US Navy, has seen less development of tourist infrastructure than the mainland and maintains a more rural character.

That is unfortunately slowly changing, as tourists discover the pleasures of spending time on the island's (in some cases, previously) isolated white sand beaches with azure transparent waters, and being away from the hustle and bustle. Despite the growing numbers of tourists making their way here, you will still find plenty of quiet spots, whether that is a mangrove forest inland or one of the beautiful beaches.
