Viareggio is a seaside resort town in Italy's Tuscany. At a short drive from both Lucca and Pisa, this town on the Mediterranean offers good beaches, restaurants and nightlife and is considered to be a bit more upscale (i.e. no binge drinking teenagers here).
Look at Viareggio from above and you will see miles and miles of neatly placed beach chairs. The beaches are quite long and flat, and behind them runs the promenade lined with anything from hotels, bars and restaurants to shops and night clubs.
Note that access to the beaches along the promenade here will set you back a few euros, and renting beach chairs is not a particularly cheap affair either. But in exchange for that you do get to enjoy one of the best beaches in the region. If baking on the beach is not your thing, next to town lies a several miles long pine forest, which combined with the flat terrain makes for a great spot for a leisurely walk or bicycle trip.
