Guillaume Cattiaux

Sun King Louis XIV's palace

Versailles is a town of nearly 90,000 to the south-west of Paris and part of the Île de France agglomeration. Although it has some other interesting sights in its own right, by far the major attraction is the baroque royal palace and garden that were constructed (or actually transformed from its previous function as a hunting lodge) by the Sun King Louis XIV in the mid-1600s. It served as the home of the royal court until 1789 and is France's grandest palace. [Review by travelindicator]
