Queen of the Adriatic

Venice is a city in northeastern Italy that is built on a set of 118 islands situated in the Venetian Lagoon, only separating itself from the Adriatic sea by a small stretch of land. This city on the water, linked together by 400 bridges and 160 canals, is frequently labelled as the most beautiful city in the world and is listed in its entirety as a World Heritage site by UNESCO.

How and when Venice was founded is a discussion of some debate, but normally the dedication of its first church in the 5th century is considered the foundation of the city. After a period of Byzantine rule, the period between the 9th and 12th century saw Venice develop itself into a city state and conquering other places, obviously helped by its strong strategic position in the Adriatic. Surging trade with the muslim world and Byzantine empire made it the richest city in the world by the 1200s. Eventually a period of decline did follow for a variety of reasons, and after having switched hands between Napoleon and the Austrians in more (relatively) recent times the city finally became a part of Italy proper in 1866.

Venice's historical sights have been well-preserved, for instance avoiding much (any) damage during the Second World War. Not much has changed in the preceding hundreds of years. Although the city is nowadays an utterly touristic place, its romantic charm therefore remains.

If there was ever a must-see location anywhere in the world, this is it. Go to Venice to wander around and take it all in. Start at the San Marco square and make your way to the Rialto bridge and finally around the city. Admire the bridges and perhaps take a gondola tour on the Grand Canal. Most importantly: use your imagination and don't let the crowds spoil the fun. [Review by travelindicator]
