The walled city-state located within a city (Rome), within a region (Lazio), within a country (Italy) within, although not part of, a European Union ... within - we'll just stop right there. It is safe to say that it has an intriguingly complex standing internationally. But you need not worry about all that.
Though the smallest country in the world measuring some 0.44 square kilometres, Vatican City is a perculiar place that has managed to cater to an ever flowing tourist crowd that come in their millions throughout the year. Mainly attracting those of Christian/Catholic faith particularly during important religious times like Easter, Christmas along with Papal ends and beginnings.
But ever increasingly attracting those of other or of no faiths who come largely due to its historical significance played out over the centuries which put simply is quite fascinating. Along with The Vatican's artistic fame - no doubt you will already be familiar with some of the more grand masterpieces that are located here such as Michelangelo's iconic work on the roof of the Sistine Chapel.
Another key attraction is The Basilica of St Peter which is one of those places one must see with their own eyes to gain a truer sense of both its scale and beauty. Enjoy some time at St Peter's Square and if you're so inclined hit up the Vatican Museum which is jam packed full of meaningful artefacts. When seeing this and further pondering what is held within the mysterious Vatican vaults you get the feeling that this is a kind of safety deposit box for the world - one guarded by highly trained & slightly intimidating court jesters.
If you want a cultural/religious bender than you can be sure to get a high dose of it within a very short amount of time and distance. Totally worth a visit - especially if you are travelling to Rome anyway. [Review by nikodonnell]
