Upington is a city of roughly 75,000 people in South Africa's Northern Cape. The city, capital of the Green Kalahari region, is set along the green banks of the Orange River amidst what is an otherwise very arid landscape.
With an airport that has daily arrivals from Johannesburg and Capetown and a train station that is part of the TransNamib Railway (connecting it to Windhoek in Namibia), Upington is a convenient place for making a stopover and stocking up on things. It is the largest city in vicinity of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and is about 1.5 hours by car from the Augrabies Falls and hotsprings of Riemvasmaak - both attractions really worth visiting.
The residential neighbourhoods are green and pretty, featuring wide streets and the odd Dutch Reformed Church here and there. This is your typical average-sized South African town where the streets are sometimes named after historical figures like van Riebeeck, Kruger and sometimes after the likes of Mandela. The center of town is a collection of supermarkets, car dealers and malls and though convenient not all that appealing. Of interest may be the Kalahari Orange Museum where you can explore the (at times turbulent) history of the town which was first settled in 1884.
One other thing Upington is famous for is wine (mostly whites). These are produced by the half a dozen estates of the Orange River Cellars (apparently the largest in the country), all located along the river. WIne tastings can be arranged, though the wine route is fairly long at 300km, along the N10 and N14 roads next to the river. [Review by travelindicator]
