The Wandering Angel

Gorgeous country, grey capital, or?

Ulaanbaatar is the capital of Mongolia, located in the North of the country near the Gorkhi Terelj National Park. With a population of 1.3 million, it is also the largest city of the country.

As Mongolia is a country with a long and great history, the Mongolian countryside is stunning, and its people are friendly and welcoming, you would expect a capital befitting that image. That is not really true as the cityscape of Ulaanbaatar is in fact quite grey and often unremarkable. Still, there are some interesting sights, and as the story often goes with cities like these: you can't understand the country if you don't experience the capital. And once you have done so, you can go and explore the countryside from here.

The two most famous sights in the country are the Gandan and Choijin Lama Monastery. The former (pictured) is the main monastery in the city and home to thousands of monks. The Choijin Lama Monastery is located right in downtown Ulaanbaatar and consists of 5 temples as well as a museum about the history of Buddhism in the country.

As a final remark, take not of the climate. Summers are very pleasant, but expect harsh conditions between November and March. [Review by travelindicator]
