Tsetserleg is a city of 20,000 people in Mongolia, situated about 6 hours by car (600km) to the west of Ulaanbaatar. It is the capital of Arkanghai Aimag and lies in a valley of the Khangai Nuruu, which is Mongolia's second largest mountain range. Because of its location it is a popular stopping place for those on their way from cities south and east of the mountains to attractions further up north and west.
But besides being convenient, Tsetserleg has some other things going for it, too. Considered to be one of the more pleasant provincial capitals, its location amid the rolling brown hills is quite appealing, and all of this is best viewed from its main attraction: the Buyandelgeruulekh Monastery. Not everything of it remains, but the main hall and over a hundred stupas do.
The other sight is the Zayain Khüree Monastery which houses the Aimag's museum. Besides being located in a spectacular setting, this museum can hold its own as it is considered one of the best museums in the country. Exhibits range from traditional Mongolian lifestyle (costumes, tools, weaponry, etc.) to local arts.
Once you've seen all of that - explore the area around and go hiking. [Review by travelindicator]
