Japan's dazzling capital

Tokyo (in Japanese: 東京, or "Eastern Capital") is the capital of Japan. When counting by the population that inhabits the greater Tokyo metropolis, this is the largest city in the world at over 35 million. In Tokyo you will find sights ranging from historical Japanese sights like the Imperial Palace in Chiyoda to the neon lights of Shibuya and quirky modern Japanese teenage culture in Harajuku. Temples, shrines and palaces next to anime shops, sushi restaurants and karaoke bars all add up to make Tokyo the fascinating city it is.

If you are travelling from a western country and this is your first time in Asia, be prepared to feel amazed and slightly overwhelmed while your senses adjust to their new surroundings. But even if you are well travelled in Asia, Tokyo is something else. It is an extremely civilized and orderly city that is at the same time extremely colorful and fashionable.

Shibuya is probably ground zero for tourists who come here for the first time. Home to teenage heaven Harajuku (think Manga, music and fashion) and the famous crossing that featured amongst others in the movie Lost in Translation, this is a fashionable area and a great place to gasp and observe the crowds.

The Meiji (shinto) Shrine and Sensoji temple are the top spiritual destinations in the city whereas the Imperial Palace gardens and National Museum are obvious cannot-be-missed attractions. [Review by travelindicator]
