A quieter kind of Florida

Tampa is a city in western Florida
A 4 hours drive from Miami brings you in a notably quieter city
The Aquarium, theater, Ybor city and an Africa-themed amusement park are the main sights

On Florida's west coast and based around Tampa Bay, Tampa (population 347,645) is not really a city that people typically associate with tourism. Most people heading to Florida will definitely check out Miami, and might then look for other places in the state to explore, like Tampa, but you will be hard pressed to find a lot of people who travel world or country to come here. Still we think Tampa is not a bad place to spend some time in if you prefer things a bit quieter than Miami.

Tampa's downtown area along the Hillsborough River is your typical American business district, with every block holding a tower. Pretty much how an area like that would look like if we were to design it in Sim City, so not all that exciting. Here you will find some interesting places to go however, such as the Florida Aquarium and historic Tampa Theatre.

No, its two real main attractions lie further to the north. Historic Ybor is about a 20 minutes walk from the heart of the CBD and is a vibrant multi-ethnic (mostly Latin) area. Here you will find historical buildings and can do endless boutique shopping but perhaps more importantly, at the end of the day the place really comes alive as its nightlife is renowned.

The other place to check out in Tampa is Busch Gardens, a theme park focused on Africa providing a mixture of a zoo and amusement park catering to practically everyone. From rides, to wild animals and live music, you can't really go wrong there.

Oh, and head to St Petersburg and Clearwater next door for some of the finest white sand beaches you will see anywhere in the United States. [Review by travelindicator]
