Suzhou Travel Guide and Trip Resources

China's garden city

If you are looking for a quick trip away from Shanghai that can be done in a day, Suzhou (苏州) is probably your best bet.

This city - which in China somehow manages to feel like a provincial town yet has twice the population of (urban) Chicago - is famous for its Chinese gardens which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is reachable from Shanghai within 30 minutes by taking a bullet train. Those trains depart on regular basis from the railway station that is connected to Shanghai's domestic Hongqiao airport.

Suzhou is located on the shores of Lake Taihu and is a city with a history going back about 2,500 years, when it became the capital of the kingdom of Wu during the so-called Spring and Autumn period of Chinese history. Although nowadays as competitive on the skyscraper front as any other Chinese city and not a bad place to shop, its main sights are very much related to that long history.

Of course its top attractions are the Chinese gardens with such elaborate names as The Humble Administrator's Garden (Zhuo Zheng Yuan) or The Lingering Garden (Liu Yuan). All of these have water as their main theme and are filled with bridges, islands and pavilions. The main sight however, is undoubtedly Tiger Hill. With its iconic pagoda and large park around it, this is a place filled with history that is great to stroll around in. If you can, take an English-speaking guide so that you can get a bit of historical perspective. [Review by travelindicator]
