Gateway to the west

St. Louis is the largest city in the US state of Missouri
Gateway to the west: in the early 19th century expeditions set out to the west from here
Lots of free things to do (the zoo, museums, etc.)

St. Louis has a population of 320,000 and that makes it the largest in the state of Missouri. The city lies along the Mississippi River, just to the south of the confluence with the Misouri River and its most famous monument is the pictured Gateway Arch, which somehow seems to show up in nearly every picture of the city. That Gateway refers to the city's status as the "Gateway to the west": this is from where expeditions were sent to the west in the early 1800s.

Another thing that is apparently a well-known fact about St. Louis is that it is the national capital of free things to do. Attractions like the zoo, Science Center, Art Museum, World Bird Sanctuary etc. are all free of charge, which may make this a good place to check out if you are looking to plan a city trip on a budget. And that is not even mentioning the open-air places you can check out for free like the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis and Old Courthouse or parks like the Botanical Garden and the other historic buildings along Market Street like the St. Louis Union Station.
