St. John's (pop. 106,172) is the capital of Canada's Newfoundland and Labrador and the oldest "European" city in North America. Set against the hilly terrain around a spectacular natural harbour, views over the city from the Signal Hill National Historic Site are marvellous: look right and see the city, look left and see the endless Atlantic.

The colorful facades of the wooden houses set along the harbor are iconic for the city (the "Jelly Bean Row"), and at the top of them, The Rooms towers over it. This is the cultural center of the region where you find the Newfoundland Museum, Art Gallery and Provincial Archives. The Basilica of St. John the Baptist, perhaps the most prominent architectural sight in the entire region, stands next to it.

If you feel like going for a hike (and you should), the East Coast Trail brings you to the eastern edges of North America and features some stunning rocky coastal scenery. Once you head back to the city, grab a drink at George Street and enjoy the comfort this little city in the middle of nowhere has to offer its visitors. [Review by travelindicator]
