Sorrento (Italy)

Sorrento Travel Guide and Trip Resources

La dolce vita across from the Vesuvius

Sorrento is a town in the Southern Italian region of Campania. It is located at a 40 minutes drive from Pompeii and a 1 hour drive from Naples. Across the Bay of Naples lies Mt Vesuvius.

A coastal tourist town that faces the sea from above the rocks, this has sometimes been called the most beautful stretch of coastline in the world. There are no proper beaches inside of the town or in the immediate vicinity, but strolling along the water and being able to overlook the sea from a slightly elevated level makes up for that so much that nobody really misses the beaches in Sorrento.

Sorrento is a great place for exploring the region (Capri, Naples, the Amalfi Coast and Pompeii are all easily reached), but the town itself has plenty of interesting sights too. Old Sorrento is a combination of narrow alleyways, trattorias and funky colorful souvenir shops. The Cathedral towers over the Piazza Tasso, the place around which activity centers in the evening. Make sure to try the limoncello, a digestif that is made from lemon rinds. [Review by travelindicator]
