Open air museum

Siena is one of the highlights of Italy and Tuscany in particular
A walled city that feels very much like an open air museum full of Gothic-style architecture
The Piazza del Campo and Duomo are the two center pieces

It is always easiest to review a place when you have just been there, and in the past weeks we had the pleasure of being one of the many thousands of tourists embarking on the stunning medieval Tuscan city of Siena during Italy's summer holiday season. In addition to Florence, Lucca and Pisa, this city practically completes the list of must-see "major" Tuscan cities, and is without a doubt also one of Italy's hottest destinations.

In Siena, the narrow alleys and winding streets lined with red brick buildings invariably seem to lead to Piazza del Campo, a large shell-shaped square that is one of the loveliest public spaces we have ever set foot in. On that square the Palazzo Pubblico takes center stage, and when you walk into a street in any direction from here and you will find yourself in either a fantastic showcase of Gothic architecture, a shopping paradise with all the designer labels, or a gastronomic heaven with fantastic trattorias in every alley you head into. Or all at the same time, depending on what you allow to catch your eye.

Besides the Piazza del Campo, the Duomo as well as Pinacoteca should be on top of your list. But in reality Siena feels more like a huge open-air museum that will keep you entertained from the moment you take an escalator up from one of the parking garages outside the city walls.
