Shenyang is the capital city of northern China's Liaoning province. Located approximately 600km to the north-east of Beijing and about 250km from the country's border with North Korea, the city used to go by the name of Mukden, its Manchu name.
While much of the city is your ordinary Chinese metropolis, congestion, shopping malls and skyscrapers and all, what really stands out are the UNESCO-listed Imperial Palace and two tombs you can find here. The Imperial Palace is one of China's key national attractions and one of the only two remaining of such palaces in the country. Initially constructed in 1625, it is much smaller than the Forbidden City in Beijing, but presents visitors with similarly stunning courtyards and halls, which house over 300 rooms.
The Zhaoling Tomb of emperor Huang Taiji and Fuling Tomb of Qing Dynasty founder Nurhachi are other key national attractions, while a good amount of parks, lakes, pagodas and such complete the mix. [Review by travelindicator]
