Sapporo (Japan)

Sapporo Travel Guide and Trip Resources

Of winter fame

Sapporo, famous for the beer with the same name, is the fourth city in Japan in terms of its population, which nears 2 million. Sapporo is located on the island of Hokkaido (of which it is the capital), at about 830 kilometer or 520 miles to the north of Tokyo. In contrast to some of Japan's older cities with roots sometimes going back hundreds or thousands of years, Sapporo is a fairly modern city, being founded only in 1868. Besides the beer, the city's biggest claims to fame are the 1972 Winter Olympics that were held here as well as the annual snow festival (held each first week of February).

With all the cold weather and the mountains next door, you can almost work out yourself what else happens here in winter: its ski resorts draw big crowds. Sapporo Teine is the closest resort to the city (at about 20 km or 12 miles), but if you want to make a bit more effort, make the 2 hour journey to Niseko, which is often named as the best one in Japan.

If the winter activities do not interest you, instead come here in summer when temperatures reach a comfortable 25 degrees and the rest of Japan is hot and sticky. If you do, just make your way to Odori Park (Odori translates as "big street") and explore the city from there. If you are here to shop, make your way to Sapporo Factory, a huge shopping complex near Odori Park. As a final note, don't pass up on trying the famous Sapporo ramen. [Review by travelindicator]
