Spanish fortresses in the Americas

San Juan is the capital and largest city (population 400,000) of Puerto Rico, an unincorporated territory of the United States. After Santa Domingo in the Dominican Republic, San Juan is the oldest European settlement in the Americas.

The best place to see the traces of its 500 years history in their full glory is Old San Juan. This historic core of the city (formerly used as a military stronghold) is situated on a rocky peninsula off the mainland and is home to many attractions. Amongst those are El Castillo de San Cristóbal, one of the larger Spanish fortresses in the Americas, and the citadel of Castillo de San Felipe del Morro, established in the 1500s and historically used as a guarding fort over the San Juan harbor.

There are plenty of other sights, which you can take in at your leisure as everything in the old town is in walking distance. In between chill out with a coffee at a cafe around one of the plazas, check out one of the parks or just spend a day at the beach (El Condado is the best place to check out)!
