European atmosphere in an American city

San Francisco is a city in California on the west coast of the United States. It is the center of the San Francisco Bay Area and is well-known for its liberal attitude, the Golden Gate Bridge, hilly streets and cable cars. While the city is "big" when it comes to the amount of things that can be seen and done here, it isn't remarkably big in terms of size and population - the city proper only has a population of under a million although its metropolitan area is several times that.

It is often said that San Francisco is the most "European" of the big American cities. It is something about the city's architecture and infrastructure, small streets, walkability and even people's liberal attitudes that makes people feel that way. Maybe the city's obsession with good food is related to it too; here you will find more restaurants and markets per capita than in any other city in North America. It does Asian food better than any other place in the country, and a natural starting place to explore what's on offer would be the large Chinatown. Besides its food offerings, the nightlife scene is bustling too as the city is home to an enormous amount of lounges and clubs, each catering to their own "scene".

In terms of other sights, the Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman's Wharf and Alcatraz are not to be missed. But San Francisco is not (just) a city of clear cut tourist attractions, as a big part of the appeal is to just walk around and explore the very diverse neighbourhoods around town. There's the Castro distict, big with the LGBT crowd. Or there's the colorful Haight-Ashbury neighbourhood with its bohemian vibe, of Summer of Love fame. Theres Chinatown, there's North Beach (AKA Little Italy), etc. The list goes on! [Review by travelindicator]
